Why Belgrade
A restaurant meal, a night in a good hostel, a river taxi and a coffee still add up to less here than a single round of drinks in London or Vienna. The splavovi (floating river clubs) and the underground club scene have made Belgrade one of Europe’s leading nightlife destinations, and unlike most party cities it works well for people arriving alone. Many nationalities, including EU, US and UK citizens, can currently visit visa-free for short stays (check the rules for your passport), and since Serbia sits outside the Schengen Area, those days generally don’t count against a Schengen allowance. Serbian hospitality has a direct, unfussy warmth: sitting alone at a bar, restaurant or market stall is unremarkable here, and a conversation with a stranger is more likely than not.

I’m Nevena Jokic, a writer and Belgrade native who splits my time between Serbia and the UK.
